RedHat on Hyper-V Video

TechNet Edge published a video on what MS is doing with RedHat on Hyper-V and shows it in action.

It sounds like the validation process for RedHat will be done in H2 of this year.  No timeframe on the integration components.  Integration components offer significant performance enhancements over emulation.  I’ve seen this with SUSE.

It will be certified on W2008 and W2008 R2.  R2 will support Live Migration – this works even with emulated guests.

  1. About time MS shed some light on this. As you’ve mentioned elsewhere, if they support RedHat, we should get CentOS in the bargain. I am hoping to see them get serious about supporting Linux as a Hyper-V guest. I have kind of been wondering how they will manage kernel changes. The current Linux Integration components only support version up to kernel version 2.6.18. Anything newer causes problems, due to some change in the API.

By the way, Aidan there is a new Beta release of the Hyper-V R2 Linux Integration Components:

Naturally, only availble from Connect.microsoft site.

  2. Tim,
I think Redmond are starting to get the hint that they need to increase platform support on Hyper-V, etc. There’s a lot of conversation behind the scenes that I can’t talk about. It’s not going to happen this year 🙁 but changes are coming on a broader scale.

The one thing that VMware can reliably beat up Hyper-V R2 with at the moment is platform support. The other enterprise management vendors (HP, CA, etc) can also do the same with OpsMgr – at the moment. 2007 R2 starts to change this. We do need to see support go beyond the Enterprise editions of SUSE and RedHat though.

    – Aidan.
