You can now read about the changes and non-changes to Windows Server 2012 R2 licensing.  Microsoft has released three PDFs on the WS2012 R2 site:

I’ll follow up with a deeper dive in a day or two.

Here is my follow up on licensing the core editions of Windows Server 2012 R2.

  1. Wow Data Center Licensing has gone way up! (It was $4809 per proc list)

Combined with SCVMM Enterprise Licensing increases is Hyper V really the cheaper option these days?

Last Novembers 15% CAL price increase was hard enough to swallow and now this.

    • Please send me your employer’s/customers’ addresses, phone numbers and CEOs names/addresses. I want an easy $10K reward for illegal licensing.

If you’re running Windows VM then you license the hosts for Windows Server, no matter what virtualization you use. Been like that since at least 2004. Sounds like you don’t get that, and I get some easy money.
